Where Do Cardinals Go in the Winter?

Having lived most of my life up north I noticed not many cardinals remain for the winter (those that do spend most of their time in conifer trees at least at night). What was a wonderful surprise this winter is to see 20 or more cardinals show up on our lawn for a period of time each morning. I recently just learned from Rusty that they really like corn kernels. They go right for the base of the seed and leave the rest for other birds to pick over.

As there is still plenty of winter left, I guess I am off to buy some corn.
